Scalebeck Holiday Cottages

Activities

There are lots of activities on offer in the Eden Valley and further afield. Most of our visitors come for walking, with plenty of choices from short strolls to 20 mile hikes to town trails. Others prefer cycling along the quiet lanes, horse riding across the fells or fishing.

Here are some suggestions – there really is something for everyone!

Scalebeck Holiday Cottages

Walks

Cumbria is a paradise for walkers with plenty of options from Lake District mountains, to limestone escarpments and sweeping fell side views. Challenging climbs to gentle riverside strolls and town trails. You can find lots of suggestions and walks to download on the Visit Eden website here. Or if none of these take your fancy you are always welcome to borrow one of our books of walks.

Cycle Tours

If you love cycling you are welcome to use our bike store (just let us know in advance). There are plenty of quiet undulating rural lanes to explore as well as off road options and hill climbs. If you like a challenge then it is just 10 miles to the start of the climb up Great Dun Fell, said to be one the toughest climbs in England. You can find more information and routes to download on the Visit Eden website here. You can find options for bike hire there too.

Horse Riding

We know some of you may prefer to explore the countryside on horse back. There are several stables in the Eden Valley where you can go trekking or take a lesson. Some of the options are listed here on the Visit Eden website.

Fishing

Cumbria claims to have more fishing waters than any other county in England, and with plenty of them in the Eden Valley. A (very) long list of options can be found on the Visit Eden website by clicking here.

Water Sports

Another option during your stay is to be active on the water at Ullswater. You can try your hand at canoeing, kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, or hire a rowing boat or motor boat. More information and details of hire companies and tour providers can be found on the Visit Eden website here.

Charming cottage with fantastic hosts! It is warm and cosy in the cottage and it is our home away from home. Owners are very accommodating and quick to respond. The place is very clean.

Home away from home!! My little family and I (wife, toddler and small dog) were pleasantly surprised when we checked in. The pictures don’t do enough justice to the ambience to the place. It’s nice warm, cosy and clean. Especially after a day of exploring the nearby river and forces. Kay is very responsive and very helpful before and during our stay. She made us feel welcomed and gave us good recommendations for walks and restaurants to try out. Anything that you will need to cook is available. Please note though that there is no salt/ pepper/ sugar/ tea/coffee due to the Covid-19 but has all the crockery if you bring your own. We will definitely be back and with proper rain gear and boots next time.

Perfect place for a workation. WiFi is super fast (wasn’t working the first day but got quickly fixed the next morning) and the space is very comfortable. Near the lake district and the Pennines with many hiking options.

Wonderful airbnb! Clean, very well equipped house. Great to see the red squirrels and deer in the garden. Helpful instructions for everything in the house and hosts available if needed. Perfect fenced off part of the garden for our dog to be off lead too. Great walks from the house and easy access to Pennines, dales and lakes – brilliant location. Lovely time.

The location was gorgeous, we loved the Eden valley, with its hidden tiny villages, cozy pubs and people. We recommend the scalebeck cottage because it is in a right distance to lake district but it gives you the chance to explore even the Eden valley. Kay and Andy were very kind and they gave us a lot of precious tips about the area.

We stayed in The Woodland Cottage and everything was perfect for us. Kay’s attention to detail is outstanding. It’s a peaceful remote location surrounded by fields, ideal for getting away from it all. We would highly recommend this place.

Such a magical place to relax and stay away from the frenetic rhythms of the city. The cottage is beautiful, cosy and immaculate. Kay and Andy have been fantastic hosts, there was a small leak in one of the pipes in the house that was repaired straightaway. If you’re in for a tranquil stay away from everything, than look no further. Expect to be mesmerised by the sounds of nature. We’d love to come again.

Meadow Cottage is located in a beautiful setting with nothing but hills and pastures to be seen from the lounge window. It also has an attractive garden area where you stand a good chance of seeing Red Squirrels. The cottage is very comfortable with a large bedroom and bathroom downstairs. Upstairs has a well-equipped kitchen, dining area and comfortable seating. Positioned in the north west corner of the Yorkshire Dales, it also gives you easy access to the Lake District National Park and North Pennines AONB. We can highly recommend a stay in Meadow Cottage and hope to return ourselves some day in the future.
